NOW PLAYING:
Peter Katz - More Nights

Every
spring when the birdies come back home, we develop a small pigeon problem
in the courtyard of our apartment. Those guys really dig hanging out
there and will fly up to land on balconies, inevitably crapping all over
them. Some people have such a problem that they've had to install netting
over their balconies to keep pigeons out. So it's imperative that you let
the little bastards know that your balcony isn't for crapping and/or
nesting on!! If you get at them early enough, you can pretty much
keep them off the balcony for the summer.
For the first while, we think we
have it covered because we have a cat to scare them away. However,
Willis is completely useless for this task. If a bird lands on our
balcony, he basically hides, shakes, and makes noises more akin to the
bray of a goat than any kind of feline. Free
lunch on the patio does not illicit a rational and normal response from
our cat. He's a strange bird himself! Haha, see what I did
there!!?? Eughh, I hate myself.
So that leaves it up to us, when we're home, to keep an eye on the balcony
and scare off the pigeons whenever they land. This year, they're more daring (or
just dumber) than usual - you can bang on the window, or even open
the sliding door and they still won't leave. You physically have to
go outside as if you were going to attack them to get them to fly away.
Cookie came up with the genius
idea of filling a spray bottle with acid water to shoot
at the little buggers when they come around. So we've been doing
that for a couple weeks now, and is it ever fun!! Cook hears a little flap
of the wings and goes racing out on the balcony to soak 'em good!
She laughs and laughs, then I laugh and laugh. Yep, she's a funny
little birdie herself.
So now they've pretty much learned to stay away from our balcony, we're
poop free, and have not had to impact our sightlines or sense of freedom
with bird netting. On the rare occasion that one decides to land on
our balcony, you literally just need to come in sight of the window and
pigeon dude will flip out like a mental patient and take off at lightning speeds.
It's hilarious.
The downside is that spraying the
pigeons was so effective and so much fun that we're starting to miss
shooting at them. We're now considering getting ourselves a
SuperSoaker so we can dramatically increase our spraying distance and
shoot at the ones that still land a few apartments down or beside us.
I'm also considering building a decoy robot pigeon to flap and coo and
lure them into my trap. And by "trap", I mean BBQ.

Jim Bryson - Where The Bungalows...

Howdy gang.
I'm super-stoked to report that as of Monday evening, my new record was
completed. Mixing went amazing, it all sounds great. As of
right now, it's being mastered in sunny Ventura, CA. I had to send
it out west by FedEx and it was really fun watching my package make its
way across the country, stopping in cities I've never been to. The
lucky little bastard is hanging out in Cali right now. Nice life,
eh?
I'm so tempted to spill all the beans about the album details, but I will
bite my tongue for now. You and I are gonna have all summer to talk
about stuff, so I will just take this time now to simply enjoy the
satisfaction of completing this huge project. I've been thinking
about it and working on it for so long, it hasn't really sunk in (that
it's done) yet.
This weekend should take care of that, though. There's nothing like
sitting in your underoos in the sun, drinking icey Blondes and listening
to Bob to reacquaint you with the ebb and flow of your nugget.
Wow. Do I even speak English anymore?
Enjoy the long weekend. Be safe.

I was about to
walk through a little park on my way into the studio this morning. I
came upon my usual well-worn path that cuts diagonally from one side of
the park to the other. There's a wandering, concrete walkway that
weaves through the park, but most people clearly prefer the shortcut.
Pretty standard stuff, right? I mean, no matter where you live,
there's always a well-worn path across the schoolyard, across the
cemetery, across that one neighbour's big lawn....
This morning though, it bummed me out. I had sort of an epiphany and
developed this analogy. (What can I say? I can't listen to my
iPod when I'm mixing, so I've got time to think about shit!)
Shortcuts really are our problem. Whether it's just getting
to work, raising our children, or maybe just sticking to a diet and
exercise regimen: we see the shortest distance from one point to the
next; the path that requires the least effort, and we take it.
Daily.
We don't always see the immediate effects of our choices (or lack
thereof), that's why we make the same ones over and over. Then one
day you realize there's a
swath mowed right through the grass. We stop and we think, how did
that get there? You're on the other side now, looking at the
ugly, scarred park and wish maybe you did things differently.
Luckily, it's just grass. Plant some seeds, stay off the thing for a
while and it'll grow back.
But what of our health? Our children?
Consider instead, if every day each person walked through that park in
completely random, wavering courses through the grass and/or the intended
walkway. Not only would it never wear down and ruin the park, it
would also put you in a position to learn and see new things along the
way. Instead of looking back at what we've created with regret,
you'll likely have built something of substance.
And let's be honest: if I didn't mix things up all the time, I never
would have found that subway token in the grass. I never would have
found that old, discarded Hustler mag. I certainly wouldn't have
found that hill of ants and slathered honey on my bum, thereby discovering
the forbidden, titillating pleasure of
insect love.
Hey!
I'll stop judging you when you stop judging me!!

Feist - The Reminder

So everyone
and everything is
going green. This is obviously great, I'm all for it...but I just
can't help but think that the solution is more simple than how it's
currently being approached. If we all just did our best to make
changes that reduce our consumption and waste, rather than just running
out and buying tons of eco-friendly shit....
Mixing is going splendidly. I'm at that crucial point right now
where I'm starting to over-listen and over-focus on the little details
like only a crazy person would. I'd be interested to talk with other
musicians and mix engineers out there to see how they deal with this stage
in the game. There's no way around it - in order to make the mixes
sparkle, you must spend tons of time hammering on the details.
However, to avoid the desire to stab yourself in the face whenever you
hear the songs, you must not over-listen.
The answer to the above is most likely: pay someone else to do it.
At any rate, I've got a mastering date booked for May 15th. So
there's no going back, and I'll have to take my hands off it at some point
in the near future. If I can just tread that fine line for another
couple of weeks, my album will be done done done and my face will remain
remarkably un-stabbed. Well, except for that
unfortunate long scar on my chin. What can I say, I get overzealous
with the beef jerky!
Oh, and just a quick reminder about the super fun show coming up this
Saturday night at the NOW Lounge. It's gonna be an awesome night of
music, I hope to see you out!
Insert penis joke here. Hehehe, I said "insert penis."
