Laura Veirs - Year Of Meteors
Sam says, "Packing is super fun!"
Ahh, spring is the air. I'm feeling way better, so I hope you
haven't been reading too much into my (infrequent) posts over the last
couple of months. It's been a long winter, with lots of challenges
and obstacles. Haven't felt much like writing, and when I did, it
was mostly to vent. This has been the first winter in 9 years
that I haven't been able to swing a jaunty bailout to warmer climes.
(Awww, poor me. I know.) I don't deal with the cold
months very well.
White Whining aside, I'm starting to feel
the blood back in my hands, my brain, my heart...my feet need to get
moving.
However, it is true. I am leaving the city. The funny
part is, I can no longer tell if the things I hate about this place are
the reason why I'm leaving.....or is it because I'm leaving, I justify it
by focusing on what I hate? Strange. Either way, I'm excited
for some big life changes. I've lived in Toronto for 17 years and am
need of some new scenery and inspirations.
Bottom line, is that I just want to be the best father, husband, and
songwriter/music person that I can be. The city makes it difficult
to do a couple of those things with its expense and distractions. So
I'm positive that some simplifying and some focus will make life easier
for all.
I will most definitely miss the ease of commiserating and creating with
wonderful city friends, and seeing great music with little effort or
distance involved. I'll miss amazing food, oh-so-much.
I'll miss limited run/indie films and art spaces. Good record shops.
That's about it. None of that is a tragedy though, as I'm only a
short drive away.
I will not miss hipsters. I will not miss the TTC. Traffic.
Smog alerts. Noise pollution. Overpriced housing.
Overpriced beer. Overpriced food. Overpriced lifestyle.
Nonstop Construction. Expressways. The air of superiority.
Condo skylines. Ridiculous Parking. Urban sprawl. Clubgoers.
Road omelets. Vandalism. Entitled idiots. Soccer fans.
Panhandlers and fake homeless people. Clueless Tourists (there's a
band name right there!). Traffic helicopters outside my window.
The CN Tower. Billboards. Taxis.
...and breathe!
So keep your eyes peeled for more regular updates, more music, more
writing, more of everything really. Just less frustration,
confusion....at least until the 27.5 new issues we never thought about
surface in the coming months.
Yep. You gotta go there to come back.

M.Ward - Hold Time

Well, hello. A typically overdue drop-in, I suppose. Oh well.
I'll try and do better. Been focusing on being a Dad, writing new
music, and getting involved in my new community of
Midland/Penetanguishene, ON. I haven't quite arrived yet (not
until April), but I've been busy getting the big change in motion.
I'm so excited about the amazing music that's going on in my hometown and
surrounding area. It's all because of the amazing
Stellula Music in
Schools program that I've been working with over the past few months.
In an effort to inspire the musical youth, we're tapping deep into the
very healthy and vibrant roots, folk, blues, and alt-pop scenes around
Ontario and beyond. We then bring those acts into the schools for
workshops and then into the community for an evening show. The
quality of the talent will drop your jaw. The fact that a lot of
them are friends of mine, makes me feel even better. That's because
I wouldn't spend any amount of time with anyone with ego issues or bad
attitude. All of these artists are as down to earth and approachable
as they are talented. So when you check out these gigs, make sure
you say hello and let then know Coop sent ya.
The hardest part has been keeping you up to date with all the awesome
music that's going on. You need to come to these shows, you need to
tell your friends and family to come to these shows. They're still
very intimate, but that won't last for long, I'm telling you that much
right now. These are highly acclaimed touring acts, each with an
amazing back story and laundry list of national musical accomplishments.
Ultimately, what I really envision
Stellula to mean is "TRUST US". When you see a poster or see
an ad, or a friend tells you about the funny name you can't remember, you
just GO. Trust us, it will be worth your time and definitely
an experience you won't see everyday.
The incomparable Peter
Katz will be at the RYE
cafe in Midland on March 12th. Peter is a beautiful soul and
engaging performer. Don't miss him!!
Steve Strongman
(!!) and Carlos Del
Junco are in town for an intimate double-bill on April 1st, again at
the RYE cafe. Steve & Carlos are easily two of Canada's very
best "new" blues artists and will absolutely blow your mind. Expect
face melting blues licks and tasty, tasty collaborations between these two
blues monsters.
And of course, even wee ol' me and
the band will be playing a full show on April 16th with the stupendously
fabulous Good Lovelies
at the excellent
Huronia Museum. Their new artspace is really something, and
we're all excited about it. I cannot wait to bring the whole thing
back home and do something really fun for my official homecoming.
See more on the SHOWS
page.
THEN, all of this amazing music and energy will come together for a
massive event at the King's Wharf Theatre on May 23rd. I can't
reveal too many details yet, but when I do, you will all be the first to
know and you will want to be there. It's going to be amazing.
Please come along for the ride, my friends.
