FUN WITH TAPE - FREE MP3 (read on)!
I've been listening to two really outstanding albums this week, AA Bondy's
"American Hearts" and Jakob Dylan's "Seeing Things". I can't recommend
these albums enough. These guys are making killer records with cheap gear,
serious sonic imperfections like vocal "pops" and audible distortion all
over the place. Christ, Jakob Dylan made his record with
Rick Rubin
and it still exists this way! Why? Straight ahead, simple and honest with top notch
songwriting and performance is at the forefront. The other stuff you don't
even notice when the music and performances are this good. The more and
more I get into engineering and production, the more I realize it all just
gets in the way. So...
In an attempt to rid myself of some lingering self-doubt about the endless
attempt for sonic perfection, and to put my money where my mouth is...I
thought I'd try my hand at some old school lo-fi recording again.
I've had this really old
Tascam 32 1/4" tape machine here at the studio
for a while, assuming it useless it's just sat there collecting dust.
So for fun, I recorded myself doing an impromptu cover of AA Bondy's "Vice Rag", looped it through the tape machine
and back into Pro Tools, just to see what it would sound like. I
personally think it's neat. The tape compression and distortion
sands off the high end and make it sound all old and warm...just like
a record.
So here you go! Fun with tape!! Go get it!!!

I've ALSO been getting back into vinyl lately, searching and picking up
some classic 70's songwriter LPs (mostly folk & country)...if you have
old records you don't want, let me know!! I even looked
into what it would cost to get a few copies of "Tiny Increments"
pressed on wax. I'm sorry to say, that venture is not even remotely worth my while.
What was worth my while was that time I ate three cans of baked
beans, put an ear of sweet corn in my bum and made popcorn for everyone at
the Olde Town drive-in.
In hindsight, a different example would have been a better idea.
If there only was a way for me to delete what I write.

I'm finding that I have a new angle of respect and empathy for the
handicapped and their daily plight to get around this city. Wait.
Let me be absolutely clear - I'm 500% not about to imply imply that my
miniscule brain can even comprehend the daily hardships of the handicapped
- I'm just saying....having a stroller and the difficulties presented to
my mobility really makes me stop and appreciate things. That's all,
I swear.
The amount of places that I can't get into now are unbelievable. I'm
still super passive, too. "Ooooh, should we go there? I
don't want to impose on those people..." I used to think the
hordes of Stroller Mafia Moms were just entitled, obnoxious people who
didn't consider how their decisions (let's breed and take over!!) impacted
other people. I'm sure there are those that are exactly that, but
I'm also realizing that it's possible their actions are more honestly
rooted in a "I've had enough of this shit treatment, THIS is what I'm
doing!" kinda vibe.
Because with a stroller, you're not even close to being handicapped, you
just have limited access to things you normally don't think about.
Like stairs. You take elevators because it's safer and easier, but
worst case scenario, you pick it up (or get some help) and haul your baby
and rig up the stairs. You can do it, it's just less than ideal.
Here's an example.
I got off at Jane station with Sam The Man, summoned the elevator and while waiting I
noticed a sign that said this:
ATTENTION: Should this elevator be out of service, please do
the following:
1. Re-enter the Jane subway platform on the eastbound side (the
only elevator is on the westbound side).
2. Travel eastbound to Dundas West station (that's 4 stops east of
Jane).
3. Take elevator to buses, then board Wheel-Trans bus 140A westbound
to Jane station (that's where I already was).
Insanity! Just to get back to where I was!? What if the
elevator at Dundas West was out of service, too? This is someone's idea of a solution!??
My heart goes out to anyone who has to struggle daily with a handicap
(which on its own is enough, isn't it!?) and then still have to deal with
3rd class treatment under the guise of "accessibility" and
further still be considered a burden on the taxpayer and business
owner. Unbelievable.

In other news,
I feel like I haven't really been able to enjoy the summer yet.
All the patios and pools that normally make up our days are not very
realistic. This weekend however, we're hitting up a cabin for a few
days and trying to get some rays, BBQ'n, and introduce Sam to friendly
northern mosquitoes. They like the taste of baby meat.
Yes, I just wrote 'baby meat'. What!!?? It's tasty!

Greetings, beautiful people. How have you been?
I hope this note finds you healthy, well, and enjoying this wonderful
summer season. Have you tried the cherries and *rhubarb yet?
Delicious. That's what I hear, anyway.
So yeah...this is my new life. Welcome. Weeks and weeks roll
on and everything changes and nothing at all changes; a flux of emotions
and love and exasperation and absolute wonderment get sucked up into the
Great Time Vortex. When you wake up on the other side (in the New
Jersey Turnpike, no less) you wonder where it all went. You can only
exist in the moment.
Our little boy is growing like a weed. He's absolutely wonderful and
reminds me that I should take better care of my skin. Fitting, with
the sun's harmful UVB rays ripping down upon us. He also reminds me
that I really don't know anything at all, but somehow that doesn't stop me
from talking like I do. You can hear me talking way too much in a
couple of recent interviews I did. You can read them
HERE and
HERE.
*This one time I ate some rhubarb and I swear I could see through
clothing. I thought your boobs looked nice but your underwear wasn't
very slutty.
