+ JANUARY 8TH, 2009                    NOW PLAYING:  Slow Runner - Mermaids

As promised, here is the ol' annual list featuring my favourite records of 2008.  I've decided it's not right to put these things into any kind of order, so I just laid them out as they came to me.  What I do know is that these records made everything good even better in 2008.  Not adhering to this list could potentially rob your life of some much-deserved joy.

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Rob Szabo - Life & Limb
Sheltered In Sound - Field Recordings From The City
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Jakob Dylan - Seeing Things
AA Bondy - American Hearts
Adam Warner - Sawdust & Sour Apples
Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night
Ray LaMontagne - Gossip In The Grain
Neil Young - Sugar Mountain (Live At Canterbury House)
Valery Gore - Avalanche To Wandering Bear
Chad Vangaalen - Soft Airplane
Neil Halstead - Oh, Mighty Engine
The Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead
The Dodos - Visiter

I didn't see too many movies in 2008, as it's very difficult to get the desired effect when you watch it in 17 different sittings.  Crying newborns interrupt the ability to do anything for longer than 20 mins at a time.  (My sex life is awesome, BTW)  I went to the movies one time, and it was the see The Dark Knight.  I thought it was as good as a blockbuster movie could be.  Like with most blockbusters, I forgot about it 15 minutes after I saw it.  Wall-E was great...a visionary, and (mostly) dialogue-free commercial risk.  When a movie like this squeaks through the Hollywood stinkpile of mediocrity (especially the animated ones which could make a bajillion dollars just by having robots fart for 90 mins), it makes me happy and restores some faith in the mainstream...um, for about 15 minutes.

+ JANUARY 4TH, 2009                       NOW PLAYING:  Blitzen Trapper - Furr

Happy New Year to you all!  All the best to you and yours in 2009!

Our wee lil' Sammy picked up a nasty cold on Dec 30th and was still plugged up, hackin' and feverish on New Year's Eve so we had to cancel our plans.  This year made me a firm believer in the benefits of an anti-New Year's Eve Party Stance (ANYEPS).  Don't get me wrong, I love the occasion for reflection and thinking back on your life as a means to recognize the ups and downs and make the changes to right your ship or stay the course.  However, on a strictly social scale, there's this insane pressure that your New Year's event has to be the best night of the year as well.  If it's not, you wind up feeling let down.

This year I was basically in bed at 10pm and as I laid there, I honestly felt relieved.  Partly because we hadn't slept because Sam was up all night the previous night, but also because when you remove those huge social expectations, it just sort of feels typically warm and nice.  Although, I must admit...you can't rail on and on about this to those who haven't bought in.  You still feel the social pressure and even more like a loser when everyone later asks, "So what did you do on New Year's!?" To which I sheepishly reply, "Oh ya, I totally partied, dude.  I'm still partying, actually. Yeah!"

Well I guess I did sort of party, if you count shaking up a bottle of $7.00 sparkling wine and popping it off the balcony at 9:30pm.  You don't?  Oh, OK...then I didn't really party on too much, Wayne.

Another thing along this line that's been going on in my brain is the very few - by comparison - things that I'm involved in these days. I'm getting great joy out of spending a quiet afternoon at home with the family, planning out a big home-cooked dinner and having a few drinks while I do it. (Yes, I drink and parent. Relax.) I couldn't be happier, especially as we get headlong into the winter months and the inevitable hibernation. I'm dreaming of hearty stews, soups, roasts, and weather-defying BBQ. It's good living.

It makes me realize how true that old adage is, "anything that's worth doing is worth doing right." It counts for the little things, too.  Focus on the stuff you do regularly in your life and ask yourself, "am I making the most of this experience?" If not, change it...or dump it altogether. Otherwise, what's the point?

So while we're not doing a whole lot more than serious family time at home, we've been praising the joys of having a decent mattress, some quality beans and booze, a nice cut of meat in the oven...you'd be amazed to learn how content you will be to just let everything else slide. And when I say "slide", I truly mean sliiiiiiiiiiiide.

P.S. - I'll be back shortly with my annual SC's Fave Records of 2008 list!
