The Grateful Dead - Closing Of...
For some reason, I've become addicted to watching the sitcom Two & A Half
Men just after we put Sam down, and just before going to bed at night. It's a
stupid show, where sexual double-speak and innuendo mingle
with paper thin plots (that make Three's Company look complex and varied) and
one-dimensional characters whose only purpose is to set up the next joke.
Why do I watch it if I think it's so stupid? I'm able to purge my daily stress or
musical obsessions that sometimes keep my head spinning into the wee
hours...all because I expect so very little from it. When I watch
Two & A Half Men, I fall asleep with a dull thud. I realize I should just read a book instead, but just can't
stop watching (and having good sleeps).
Has anyone out there ever noticed how humungous Charlie Sheen's head is?
Trust me, having a massive cranium myself has caused me to take note of
such things. Have a look at the noggin' real estate right here.
Dude has to step into his shirts!

Bon Iver - ...Transmissions (Live)

In this crazy town, we go to the big box stores to fill our cupboards,
then go to the big chain restaurant for dinner, and then the megaplex to
shut out the noise in our heads with the latest explosion-filled Hollywood
blockbuster. Downtown was always supposed to be the antithesis to
the generic suburb lifestyle. The place you go for culture and arts,
diverse culinary options, and other experiences you can't just get
anywhere. We put up with the insanely high costs of living for
the chance to be surrounded by things that could potentially improve the
quality of your life...or at the very least provide a little perspective
about your place in the world.
However, I've been feeling lately how much garbage we are all force fed
under the auspices of subjectivity. Art and commerce co-mingling
together, taking advantage of easily-influenced people with snappy
packaging and faux cultured aesthetics. Don't believe me? Direct your eyes
back to the picture above and see for yourself what they've done with our
supposed "diverse, cultural gathering grounds" or "heart of the
city" at Younge & Dundas Square. A megaplex theatre, mall food
court, a Jack Astor's!! Why it's a magical weave of cultural
fabric!!
It seems that very few people these days go to see art, or demand more
from our free time. Music, books, and film can enrich our lives. Most people
don't seem to value these things anymore, it's ALL about entertainment and
convenience. We grab the fastest and easiest thing in front of us and use
it to drown out the noise. In everything we do. Everything. I
want to immerse myself in family and music and pay no more attention to
the distractions. I'm finding it hard to see why people pay such a
premium to live in a city, where the extent of their cultural submersion is
what's on their iPod and the Asian people they sit behind at the multiplex
when Tom Cruise's new 2-hour Blackberry distraction comes out.
Convenience is for milk and eggs (and well, they do generally have a nice
variety of gum and those red berries that look like nipples). Other than
that, I mean.
I've admittedly been having a hard time lately reconnecting with this place and
what I thought I loved about it. Been spending a lot of time trying to figure out what makes me
jump up in the morning, and what pastes a smile on my face. What makes me
walk down the street to work, and not want to straight-arm 67% of the
clueless, inconsiderate robots I encounter each day. Perhaps, it's the
having a child in our life that has got me in the headspace to think
endlessly about the environment I'm submersing him into. These days, I feel like
my soul is in desperate need of
protection from it, so obviously that goes double for my child.
The big irony to me, is that I'm feeling more and more assault from the
very culture that we created to escape from the big bad world around us. I
want simplicity. Provide for your family. Eat. Shelter. Protection. What
else you got? There's no time for guitars and movies and the
intellectualization of What It All Means.
If you're not careful, this
world can lead easily lead you to a place where the daily
minutiae and elevated non-importance of our jobs pile up on your chest
until its weight causes you breathing discomfort.
So maybe this is our culture? OK,
I'm leaving. Seriously.
-----
I am about to embark on some major life changes...couple that with the
usual sleep deprivation and my head feels absolutely bent. The kind
of things that keep you up at night, or at least your once still brain
stirring and whirring trying to figure everything out. Don't worry,
everything is just fine with me, Cook, and wee baby Sam...it's just
inevitable changes are underway and there are too many ducks to get all in
a row to feel comfy and cozy. There are too many uncertainties to
make you feel like the decisions we're having to make are unequivocally
the right ones. How the hell can you ever really say things will be
alright anyway!? All you can do is check your gut and trust yourself.
Everything is going to be great.

Bon Iver - ...Transmissions (Live)

Today is as good a day as any to pass along the word that my wonderfully talented friends
The Good
Lovelies have released their fantastic debut full-length album.
It's simply called The Good Lovelies and it's anything but simple.
It's a feat of stellar music and production. As most of you know, my singin' chanteuse Caroline Brooks calls this band her day job.
Support these independent and massively talented women and get their
record NOW. If you don't go buy this record, you are dead to
me. I'm so happy to know these three fantastic women and have had
the honour of sharing the stage with them many times over the last few
years.
