+ APRIL 21st, 2008  NOW PLAYING:  Constantines - Kensington Heights

A friend of mine is running the Boston Marathon today.  He gave me his bib# and info, and I've been tracking his progress online throughout the run.  How cool is that!?  It's really something to be sitting here at my computer, while he's rocking through the streets of Beantown with a projected completion of 3 hours!!  I ran portions of the Toronto Marathon years ago (in 5 & 10 km relays) and it always made me feel like a gigantic pansy to see all the elderly, the young, and the handicapped people doing the whole thing.  It's so amazing.  I'm proud of my friend and his commitment and obvious athletic ability to follow through on his goal of qualifying for, and competing in, the Boston Marathon.  Why aren't we all doing these sorts of things?  There's some guy pushing his 4 year old cancer-ridden child in a wheelchair for 40km's and we can't even leave our cars parked and walk to the mall.

Suffice it to say, today's beautiful weather and self-loathing convinced me to throw on my lycra/spandex onesie and go for a jaunt up the lakeshore.  It was lovely.  I'm back now, and it looks like my Beantown-bound friend has finished the Boston Marathon in a tres swift and very respectable 3:04:16.

As for me, it only took me 35 minutes to finish my 7km leg!  I should also note that I was sidetracked for a spell while some guy's dog chased me around trying to dry hump my sleek, spandexed physique.  Oh yeah, I also stopped for a hot dog.

HAVE YOU PURCHASED YOUR TICKETS TO THE JUNE 6TH TORONTO SHOW YET?  THEY ARE SELLING FAST!  AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT, GET YOURS NOW!

+ APRIL 10th, 2008  NOW PLAYING:  Justin Rutledge - Man Descending

I'm so pumped about this St Stephen's show in Toronto it's not even funny.  I wake up in the middle of the night, giddy with excitement.  I've seen some of the best shows of my life in similar locations like Trinity St. Paul's, The Music Gallery, and Berkely Church.  So I'm very excited about the opportunity to play music in such a wonderful setting.  It's all about the music, and how could I ask for anything more than that!?

Daniel Lanois has played there.  Jane Siberry, Bruce Cockburn, and Molly Johnson have all graced the stage.  Indie-rock darlings Ohbijou, and Rock Plaza Central have all seen the potential and put on nights of their own.  However, these nights are few and far between at St.Stephen's.  Kirsten and I would like to change that.

Tons more info coming soon.  We're still working out some of those details, but on an important note - we're doing our best to make sure that those of you (like me) that enjoy having a few sodas are able to indulge.  After all, it's a protestant property...like me, they practically encourage drinking!  Heheh.

+ APRIL 8th, 2008  NOW PLAYING:  The Black Keys - Attack & Release

Here are some more random thoughts and words for April '08.

+ I have un-affectionately renamed my iPod to The iTangle.  If there's some kind of nub, a button on my coat/bag, or any kind of hook within 30 feet of me...I can somehow find a way to get my white wires caught up on it. It always results in my earbuds being violently pulled out of my ears.  I don't know if this happens to you or not.  It happens to me all the time, but to be honest, it's not just the earphones.  I get mic cables caught up on stands and pull the whole thing over on me.  I get my guitar cable so tangled up on my floor tuner that I unplug the thing with a three inch move to the left.  Yes, I am tres smooth.  If you were to give me a shoelace, I could somehow manage to hang myself on the back of a doorknob.

+ A pigeon shite on me the other day.  Seriously.  Right on my head.  I'm still waiting for my good luck...and toxioplasmosis

+ The only thing worse than the folks who buy giant gas-guzzling SUVs and trucks, is listening to some of those same people complain about how much it costs to fill their tanks.  To me, this is the same thing as buying 3 acres of property and then complaining that it takes all afternoon to cut the lawn.  What did you expect? Personal expense (via time and/or money) is built right into the "privilege" of taking more than the average share for yourself.  Either it's not a concern, or it is.  If it is...seriously...sell the thing already.  Everyone wins that way.

+ Our apartment is going to be filled with two icky, stupid boys in another 2.5 months.  Of course, one already lives there (me).  The other is going to be the much younger, less talkier version of me.  Cookie is going to be outnumbered.  Thing is, she's way smarter than both of us will be put together...so I have a feeling she will turn all the nude dancing and poop-flingin' monkey business against us.  We'll just end up doing dishes and cleaning up all the time...which is the exact opposite of my plans:  shirking responsibility, armpit farting, and playing awesome video games.

+ I've been puzzled by all the glossy, magazine spread photo DJ posters all around town.  Does anyone really care what the DJ looks like?  You'd think his name, and some pink and gold party vibe poster should do the trick.  The peoples say, "Ohh, I do enjoy dancing to the progressive-electro-retro-house, I should go."  Relax, it's a DJ.  He takes other people's records and plays them.  I'm not knocking DJ's as a profession, just the implication that they are true artists worthy of a persona.  He's a D. J.  The kind of guy who would take a Smokey Robinson track, mix it with a Beatles guitar riff, Rick Astley keyboards, 70's jazz horns, and the beat from Run DMC's "My Adidas".  Somehow, it becomes a club hit this summer.  At some stupid L.A. music party, the DJ gets to meet Smokey himself.  Rather than display a little humility, DJ guy tells Smokey he should thank him for breathing new life into his music.  Yeah, that guy.  (Is Smokey Robinson still alive?)

+ I saw a little web doc the other day about dogs and animals with special needs, and it broke my heart.  Blind dogs, cats with broken backs, little guys with only two legs pulling themselves around in doggy wheelchairs.  They're happy just to have someone that loves and cares for them, grateful for their life.  Greater still are the humans that choose to help these "flawed" animals over that of a picture perfect pup, or cute widdle puddy tat.  They see an opportunity in these animals that others do not: providing meaning to their lives.  Actually, scratch that.  They are selfless humans who probably don't think about how it will improve their own lives.  Only the lives of the animals they help.  The good karma payback just comes included with being awesome.

Don't believe me?  WATCH IT HERE.

+ APRIL 4th, 2008  NOW PLAYING:  Matthew Barber - Ghost Notes

John Lennon once said "life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans". I think the updated version of what he meant is all these distractions, coincidences and chance that fills our lives without us even noticing.  It's like so much goodness (or ugliness) passes right under our nose, and until it connects with you....you simply never notice.

+ While you were preoccupied with your blackberry, one of your best friends from high school passed you on the street. It's so weird. You've both been living here for 7 years and never once run into one another.

+ While you were busking, you stopped playing to tie your shoe. At that exact moment, a highly connected music exec walked by you and missed hearing you play a song that would have knocked him out and changed your life forever.

+ Each day you walk three-wide on the busy sidewalk with your friends, chatting and laughing.  Magically, everyone moves for you.  Imagine that.  The time (and it will come) someone else not-paying-attention inevitably knocks you on your ass, will you become aware of other people when walking on busy streets?  Or is it just a one-off?

+ While you were driving, you fumbled with a CD. You swerved into the other lane which caused another car to react and swerve into the bike lane and hit a cyclist. You didn't notice 'cos your head was down for a moment, then your new favourite new song came blasting out the speakers.  Hooray!  It's Friday, and you've got dinner reservations at 7pm!
