+ APRIL 20th, 2007  NOW PLAYING:  Christine Bougie - Hammy's Secret...

Allo little kittens, I'm so happy because we can finally lose our mittens!!

Mixing is well underway and things are sounding good.  I tossed a handful of tunes on the iPod this morning and took them out for a very critical test - a sunny morning stroll up Queen West.  I'm excited to report that a pleasant, vibe-y walk was achieved.  Spring is definitely in the air, I am happy, confident, excited and motivated.  I feel sexy after a relaxing bath concoction of rose petals, chamomile and Aqua Velva.  Care to move a little closer?

I have been feeling a little distressed the past couple days about the news coverage for the Virginia Tech shootings.  Specifically, during the first hours/days while the investigations were happening and no information was being given to the press.  Watching the way the media desperately grasped at straws, trying to make branded headlines out of useless "eyewitness" interviews (Bob McCob from the McDonalds 17 blocks away thought maybe he heard gunshots!).  Most pathetically, the lack of info was treated as an opportunity to rehash the past using spliced archival footage and interviews from Columbine and Dawson's College.

As the days move on, I'm mostly troubled by the overwhelming amount of coverage dedicated to the culprit/murderer while barely a breath of detail or empathy is uttered about the victims of this heinous crime.   Murderers have truly become our martyrs.

However, in a segue as self-serving as the evening news itself, all is well with the world because I am going to see
The Frames tonight.  How stoked am I!!?? Cookie and I were also going to go pop down to Montreal tomorrow to see their show there, but can't do it now.  Poo.  Maybe I'll shirk my obligations and sneak off on a midnight train bound for nowhere.  I'll meet up with a gambler.  Both too tired to sleep, we'll play gin rummey and drink ginger ale.

Relax Mom, I totally know when to fold 'em.

Much Love,
COOP

OH, if you sent me an email early this week (Sun-Weds) and I haven't gotten back to you, chances are I didn't get it.  I had some issues with my email client and it was kicking back a whole whack of stuff.  Please resend if possible.  I like mail!

+ APRIL 13th, 2007  NOW PLAYING:  Adam Warner - Live & Demos Etc.

My good friend
Scott Lanaway, posted this amazing piece on his blog/dispatch and I was so moved and affected by it I wanted to share it with you all right here.  Beautifully human and genius observations for our fast-paced world.  Thanks!

There was a great Frontline on PBS recently about the role of new media in the information business. They were discussing how a lot of the new media outlets are generating business by linking to online news being reported and written by traditional newspapers, which are themselves fighting to retain their journalistic identity in a world of corporate balance sheet mandates, and a public addicted to Anna Nicole Smith and Paris Hilton (what the hell happened to Larry King anyway -- it's embarrassing. He's interviewed Presidents and world leaders and these days it's mostly 'sensational' news... murders, deaths, controversies...)

Anyway, someone being interviewed referred to modern news consumption as 'snacking'. It's true. All these portals that many (myself included) check to catch the pulse of what the current stories are, often do not consist of meaningful discourse or investigation. News has become a source of distraction.

And that got me thinking about the way we receive information. Everything is boiled down for us. We are being encouraged to consume and dispose of information the way we are encouraged (through advertising) to consume and dispose of (and re-consume) goods.

Even on Myspace, as an example, it's overwhelming, the amount of content here. Every once in a while I get a really nice/interesting comment from someone who has really listened to my music. My music is part of my soul and it's strange to think that it is heard and judged quickly by strangers on the move through cyber content. However, I can understand why people sometimes don't really listen, as I personally don't have time to dedicate an eyes-shut 20-minute listen to every single artist who approaches me on here. No one does.

What I am concerned about is the underlying falseness of the connectivity we feel we have sometimes with one another. And this is true in regards to news. Just because we read a snippet about the latest 20-person-dead bombing in Iraq does not make us more dimensionally aware of the human cost on the other side of that story, In fact, you could argue that it further desensitizes us to the situation by reinforcing a snippet-mentality.

The news ticker at the bottom of the CNN screen is becoming the news itself.

Why do we allow 'disposability' to wash over us. Why do we accept it? If we demanded more, then the media outlets would have to capitulate - they need us to watch, to generate advertising revenue.

Sometimes I feel like our culture brings out the worst in human nature. We are coarse and unsympathetic, but we tell ourselves - and project to each other - that we are aware. We hear about other people's misfortunes and grimace sympathetically. But then there is no follow-up.

What hole are we trying to fill with all this white noise? Is it fillable?

The static of pop culture hisses and pops as we constantly troll through the dial, rarely stopping.

What is becoming of thoughtfulness, of substantive digestion, listening, discussion.

Maybe information is replacing junk food as the next meaningless compulsion that we satisfy without thinking............ :|

Lovelies, please snack on that over the weekend.

+ APRIL 10th, 2007  NOW PLAYING:  LCD Soundsystem - Sounds Of Silver

Hola!

It is I, Senor Coop, back from a glorious week in Punta Cana, DR.  Much sunshine and good times were had.  If I were any more relaxed, I'd be just about dead.  I thought it was going to take me a couple of days to unwind after the pace I was moving at before leaving.  Turns out, with just a few sips of the
Mamajuana, I was content enough to sleep nude in a bathtub.  Now that's relaxed!  As well as a story for another day...

Sometimes I'm overwhelmed with the sheer number of you that read this thing....and then sometimes I'm overwhelmed how little attention some of you pay to what I say.  I had more emails and phone calls from people wondering why I hadn't returned their emails and phone calls in the last week than I know what to do with.  Seems the ironic twist here is that
I wasn't ignoring you.  Shoot, I ain't mad atcha lovelies...I'm just saying.

So I'm just getting settled back into the real world, catching up and making plans.  I've got a beauty show this Saturday night in TO with my main man
Adam Warner and guitar genius Dean Drouillard.  I'll be playing solo to start the night, then will have the HUGE honour of playing bass in Adam's band with some of the finest musicians in the city.

All the details on the
SHOWS page.

So come on out for a great night of music and we'll catch up.  I'll tell ya the mamajuana story and maybe show you how white my arse looks now.

Much Love & Stuff;
COOP
